Castle Academy flies the flag for the environment with eco-school award

Eco-conscious pupils at Castle Academy in Northampton have been awarded a Green Flag Award for their work to make their school more environmentally aware.

The school, part of the ºÚ°µ±¬ÁÏÍø, achieved the Eco-Schools accolade in recognition of its efforts to promote environmental issues through its pupil-led eco-committee.

The members, who come from Year 6 down to Year 1, have launched a range of projects, including an eco-code to encourage others in school to be more environmentally friendly, a litter picking campaign and writing to their local councillor about environmental concerns in the local neighbourhood.

Teacher and eco-committee lead Charlie Winter said: “It’s fantastic to see how passionate the pupils are about environmental causes and what they can do to encourage everyone within our school and the local community to be more eco-conscious.

“We are at the beginning of our ‘eco-journey’ and are learning new things each time we meet, but already our eco-committee is having a real impact with their actions.”

The school has received an Eco-School Green Flag to display in school and certificates for its eco-committee members.

The feedback from the Eco-Schools Team says: “Your pupils clearly care about our planet and all plants, animals and insects that live on it. You have created passionate young environmentalists, excited about protecting our planet, and empowered to make a difference.

“We can’t wait to see how you continue to build on your many successes next year.”
